2013 watercolour, joss paper on paper 61 x 50cmThere exists a commonplace Japanese saying: �gI have a toothache.�h It also means, �gI have something that is annoyingly painful, but is difficult to get rid of.�h Within this work, the toothache is the problem of nuclear power in Japan. One of the most troubling ironies is that the nuclear reactor in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, was named after the bodhisattva Monju (Manjusri, the bodhisattva or Buddhist �gsaint�h of wisdom). The painting is coated with joss stick paper, as if in an almost spiritual effort to burn away this aching curse.
